Also known as Apollyon in the Bible, he is mentioned in the Apocalypse as having a king over them, the Angel of the Abyss, whose Hebrew name is Abaddon, and in Greek, it means destroyer. Abaddon seems to be a demon working with Satan, ruling an abyss filled with locusts that emerge on Earth during the final days. These locusts bite and cause pain to those who do not believe in Jesus Christ (Apocalypse Chapter 9, Verses 2 and 3). The smoke from the Abyss darkens the sun and air. It’s likely that Job also made reference to Abaddon in Chapter 26, Verse 6, mentioning the realm of the dead before God. Destruction is revealed here, and the Hebrew word ‘abaddon’ translated suggests destruction in the realm of the dead, essentially referring to hell. Sigmund Freud, the father of modern psychoanalysis, claimed that humans are inherently destructive beings. The Bible predicts that the impure, those without Christ’s mark, will suffer plagues in the great tribulation, while the pure-hearted will be taken to the heavenly kingdom. Abaddon’s locusts are not ordinary insects but may symbolize catastrophic events, possibly a volcanic eruption. Some interpret the smoke and locusts as a volcanic eruption’s effects, with references to lava rain and darkness. Nature might be God’s way of communicating, and some speculate that a colossal event, perhaps a massive volcanic eruption in the Pacific Ring of Fire, could align with biblical prophecies.
