Yet, their origins trace back to a familiar figure—Esau, the brother of Jacob, who became the patriarch of Israel. This ancestral connection makes their eventual enmity all the more intriguing. How did a nation with such close familial ties to Israel turn into one of its greatest adversaries? Who were the Edomites really, and what happened to them throughout history? Could there still be descendants of the Edomites today? In this exploration, we will uncover the deeper layers of the Edomites’ story as recorded in the Bible and other historical accounts. To begin, it’s essential to understand the meaning behind the name “Edom.” The word itself translates to “red” and is used in the Bible to refer to Esau, the land of Edom, and its inhabitants. Scholars have proposed three main explanations for the origin and significance of the term “Edom.” The most widely accepted theory connects the name to the event in which Esau traded his birthright for a bowl of red stew, a meal prepared by his brother Jacob. In addition to this, Esau is described as having red hair, and the term “Edom” may also relate to this physical characteristic. Lastly, a third explanation is tied to the geographical nature of the region, which is marked by red sandstone cliffs and mountains. If this is correct, it’s possible that the land was called Edom even before Esau’s descendants settled there. Regardless of the specific reason behind the name, the story of the Edomites begins with Esau, their patriarch.
