Genealogies in the Bible are far more than just a list of names. To modern readers, they may seem monotonous, but to the ancient Israelites, they held immense significance. They served as records of identity, history, and most importantly, a testament to God’s faithfulness. These genealogies traced the fulfillment of God’s promises through generations, demonstrating how He remained steadfast to His covenant despite humanity’s imperfections and failures. When we examine the genealogy of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew, the significance of this list increases dramatically. It’s not merely a lineage but a proclamation of God’s redemptive plan woven throughout history. Genealogies typically highlighted key figures, usually focusing on fathers and sons due to the patriarchal nature of ancient societies. This makes the inclusion of five women in Jesus’ genealogy both remarkable and surprising. These women are not included by mistake; rather, their presence is a deliberate emphasis on God’s grace and sovereignty.

Why would the genealogy of the Messiah, Jesus, include these women when most genealogies omitted women entirely? What message is conveyed through their inclusion? In a cultural context that often sidelined women, their presence shows us that God’s plans transcend human traditions. God does not view individuals through the lens of societal norms, gender roles, or cultural expectations. Instead, He sees each person as part of His intricate redemptive design. The presence of these women speaks volumes about the type of people God chooses to work through. Their inclusion demonstrates that God’s mercy and grace extend beyond cultural limitations, moral failings, and social standing. These women are testimonies to God’s ability to bring dignity to the despised, hope to the hopeless, and purpose to those overlooked by society.

Looking closely at the genealogy, we notice a consistent theme: God’s kingdom is not built on human merit but on His grace. Through this grace, He chooses the unexpected, the weak, and the broken to display His power. These women don’t fit society’s ideal image of righteousness. Instead, each brings a story filled with conflict, struggle, and at times, controversy. Their presence invites us to explore the nature of God’s work more deeply. God did not hesitate to include complex and morally challenging narratives in His son’s lineage because redemption is about transforming the messy into the meaningful.

  1. Another thing to keep in mind about Rahab is that she was involved in the processing and weaving of flax into linen – we know this because she hid the Israelite spies underneath the piles of flax she had drying on her roof, which is a vital part in converting it into spinnable fibers. The making of linen is an intensive process, traditionally the work of women in the home, and one of the few viable ways a woman could earn an honest living. A VERY good living, in fact, because linen has always been a hot commodity. Her whole household was likely involved, with different members focused on different steps, which would have consolidated their income and perhaps even justified an extra markup. Rahab's household should have been fairly well-off for their time and place.

So why should she also be involved in prostitution?

No one sells their body unless they have no other choice, and Rahab's household was already financially stable, so my guess is that she was likely being forced by the male head of the family – her father, husband, brother, uncle, or whoever – as a side hustle. It's likely that any other female members were also being trafficked, and any profits were going directly into their patriarch's pockets. I wish we knew more about the people in her household and what became of them.
