Ray Kurzweil is not saying the advancements will not be hard; he is saying that progress is occurring exponentially instead of linearly and therefore an amazing amount of progress is about to happen.
I haven't looked into kurzweil in a long time, but I think a big part of his vision is that humans will eventually create AI that is sophisticated enough to improve themselves and create new inventions. If that does happen, AI would rapidly surpass human ingenuity. That would probably be the last valuable invention that humans would ever create. Kurzweil believes that once AI reaches that level evolution will be thrust forward so rapidly that what comes next would be unrecognizable to humans of today (the singularity). I think he was predicting that it'll happen in 2035. Whether it happens or not, it is really interesting to thing about. Elon musk is right to be afraid of it. Skynet could become operational in our lifetime.
