Mercy Brown and her family were afflicted with tuberculosis. During this time, doctors didn’t even know what tuberculosis was, or how to treat it. Instead, many superstitions were created to explain the disease – none the least was vampirism.

You need to do one on Nellie Vaughn, was said to be the same thing, not far from the Mercy Brown cemetery, but in West Greenwich RI, was there yesterday, I live in Rhode Island, Nellie was the same age, the grass is never Green where she lies.
I would just like to point out that the hair and fingernails thing is just decomposition, but the people probably didn't know any better back then.
The disease was called Consumption at the time aka Tb.
