You are completely overlooking a critical part of the story.
King Solomon pays a kids double the normal wages for his work, but Ornuas steals half. In doing so, the boy doesn't have enough money to survive, and becomes thinner from malnutrition. This means the other children doing the same work are starving.
Ornias was not taking more, nor did the boy have an unusual appetite. It is more likely that King Solomon barely paid his workers.
