My 2pence: on disagreement…
Most conversations/disagreements are largely about sizing up where you stand in a hierarchy with the other person. The obvious consequence of removing perceived hierarchy between primates is physical altercation or worse.
This is evident with disagreements with children. You can't let the child win all the time as that is bad parenting; it says to the child that he/she is at the top of the hierarchy, and he/she is in charge of his/her own destiny. The child needs to know there is someone to protect him/her. Being a 4yr old and being signalled that you are on your own in a world of unknown is terrifying and would lead to bad things. The correct thing to do as a parent is to give pause to the disagreement and then return to it with a different approach.
Yes the police has lowered its reputation, but if you choose a society to live in you are acknowledging that the police have a mandate from the gov. to uphold law, and so you should perceive them as higher in the hierarchy (The police officer is someone doing a job, probably getting paid by you) – Unless you have bigger guns, or the money to manipulate the police or government.
