A lot of people in Ireland also call it soccer as they would refer too Gaelic football just as football
Soccer comes from when certain leagues were being established it was called Association Football in England, of course English people shorten words and started calling it soccer from the word Association, it travelled to America where it stayed soccer and in England Association (soccer) was dropped to just football
Soccer is short for Association football like Rugby Football gets shortened to Rugger.
William Webb Ellis pick up the ball and ran with it during a football game at the rugby school in England. Rugby football was called that originally because that was the style of football they played at rugby school
just call it safe rugby
