In Judaism, the divine Name of God (YHWH, often mistransliterated and mispronounced as "Yahweh" or "Jehovah") is not pronounced out of respect for the utter ineffability and transcendence of the divine Reality. "Adonai" or "Elohim" is used in its place when reciting Scripture or speaking about God. This tradition was carried over into Christianity in English translations of the Bible, which use the English term "LORD" (Adonai) where YHWH is cited in the text. That is why most Christians often say "Lord" when speaking about God, and not a direct pronunciation of the Name in either the form of "Yahweh" or "Jehovah," since neither of those translations are accurate. Although it is thought that "Yahweh" has the highest probability of being the most accurate form of pronunciation, it is still not favored out of respect for the ineffability of the Holy Name. In Christianity, this also reflects the doctrine of the unknowable essence of God the Father, who makes his nature (distinct from essence) known in his divine Logos, the eternally begotten Son, whose name and image have been made known as the most holy disclosure of God to humanity in the form of Jesus Christ, uniting the visible with the invisible, the unknowable with the knowable, and so on.
