  1. Sorry Joe. UFC is fun to watch as a sport. Effective? Go up against 3 guys with baseball bats in a glass filled alley. I don't think take downs, counter striking, or hand breaking punches to the face are going to serve you. The "traditional" arts have a thousand years of practical experience, but an awful lot of bad teachers. This is NOT to say one is "better" than the other, but there is a LOT studied in the traditional arts that might not be useful in the octagon, or a 1 on 1 on the soft grass but is VERY useful in REAL situations. Find a few fighters who studied Aikido and suddenly they truly understand what distance is, what off balance means, what over extended mean. Sometimes you have to give up on the "effective" trope, and look at what fundamentals you can learn.

  2. Imagine telling someone your hobby is Muay Thai or jujitsu and someone’s immediate response is to tell you how useless it would be against a gun or knife

Wing chun is effective as self defence. Maybe not against a BJJ champion or a trained boxer but you aren’t likely to have to defend yourself against somebody like that. Your average street fight will be against either a mugger or a drunken idiot and wing chun would work
