With such a large percentage of the workforce population having a high school education, it won’t take super smart machines to replace them. That is technology we already have and it’s being implemented at an alarming rate. I think Andrew has shifted from talking about the angle of techno doom, and pivoted more towards the winner take all economy as his justification of UBI. Then with the new gig economy that has no security or path forward and adding in AI advancements, the future he describes will happen if we don’t get ahead of it and start addressing these problems way before they happen. Even if it were gradual, there will be a time where the balance will shift dramatically and we won’t have prepared for it.
