the issue is there is not always something better you can be doing. the internet is simply the cheapest form of entertainment. so naturally it will be the popular in most cases. you have to expend resources to do anything, and people already have to pay a phone/internet bill (i guess not technically, but basically). so its essentially free unlimited entertainment. so its completely rational as anything productive takes money. like just go outside and try to find anything you can do that dont cost at least 20 bucks (guess what no one wants to walk around the block 300 times a year. I know its about the only free option). obviously if people had 100 or more bucks a day of extra money they would use it. they would go watch movies, fix up their yard, buy stuff for their house, go get drinks and socialize, go out to eat, get lil hobbies. I know some 6-7 figure people and they leave their house 3-6 times a week and are always doing something. and none of them ever understand why everyone else just sits around not doing stuff. its like when you have extra money you magically forget everyone else don't. with all that said I think social media as far as fb, twitter, and such are trash. but its not hard to understand why its widely used, its basically free and always available.
