Religion is a tool. People can use it for good or bad
My entire family aside from my twin sister is apart of a religious cult, where they are forbidden from speaking, helping or even acknowledging a person if they have left the religion. We both were terrified to leave once we turned 18 and could work and live on our own together, as this meant we could no longer speak to our entire family on my mother's side (we don't know our father or his side of the family.) I'm married now and still haven't told my husband about the atrocities we suffered in this cult, and how it hides pedophiles and criminals inside of it for safety from the authorities. I haven't told him why we can't speak to my family or why they didn't attend the wedding; 5 years later it still really hurts. I lost all of my friends and family, but at least I can still sit down with my twin from time to time to cry about what happened, then rejoice at how far we've come since then.
