Manson may have been illiterate but he did have a slightly above average IQ and was sort of charismatic in the way he would speak. To most people it sounds like a bunch of word salad babbling. What attracted people to him was he was a challenge to figure out and understand and everyone loves a challenge. If you can say things in a way that forces people to come to your conclusion without you telling them to come to that conclusion they're more likely to believe it. Manson would've been a great salesman.

Convienently not mentioning Manchurian Candidates. There is no explanation for the government experimenting on their own people strictly for offensive and shady means. This guy is a security blanket.
