Archaeologically speaking, there are few discoveries that might’ve brought the world to a standstill when they were unearthed, simply due to the magnitude of their importance. The Rosetta Stone, The site of Pompeii and even the Tomb of Tutankhamun all stand out as some fine examples of incredible archaeological discovery that were not only fascinating to comprehend, but essential in opening and looking through the window to the past. By that same vein, the Dead Sea Scrolls of the Qumran Caves also holds its own as one of the most exciting and important discoveries ever made by man – a discovery that provided invaluable insight for scholars and historians hoping to shine a light on what the Bible was like some two thousand years ago.

But what are these Dead Sea Scrolls exactly? Why is the knowledge contained within them so sought after? And what significance does the Great Scroll of Isaiah have in greater biblical understanding? Today on this new series, we’ll be analyzing each and every piece of the Dead Sea Scrolls that we can get our hands on starting first with the Great Scroll of Isaiah found in cave 1 of Qumran.

  1. It doesn't speak about Jesus at all. If you actually read the Hebrew/Greek variant it says something completely else than the English translations which is done by Christians.

  2. I wonder if I can survive this Oregon trail longer than the poor sad attempts I made in elementary school. Wow. What a blast from the past. It certainly looks better than the black screen with bright green text.

  3. You correctly refer to the Judaean kingdom, kings of Judah, etc, but slip up and use the phrase "Jewish texts". Tsk, Tsk, Tsk. During the 1st century and prior there was no such thing as "Jewish texts", because there was no such thing as "Jews" – yet. There were JUDAEANS and JUDAEAN TEXTS – made by either Israelite Judaeans, or non Israelite Judaeans (Canaanites, Edomites, etc inhabiting Judaea). It wasn't until sometime after the destruction of Judaea in the 1st century that various descendants of non Israelites who had lived in Judaea (Mostly Edomites/Idumeans, like Herod etal) began calling themselves "Jews" in an attempt to capitalize on the Judaean identity found within the Bible, but since the proper word's suffix means "people of", requiring a territory known as Judaea to be named after, and Judaea had ceased to exist circa AD 72, in order to get around it they chose a modified form without a suffix: "Jews", and began claiming it was a "nickname" or "slang" used by Romans. Which there's absolutely no evidence of. Romans, like Greeks, used numerous variations of words depending on certain circumstances. In Latin there was a form of "Judaean" to signify singular male, singular female, singular neuter, plural male, p!ural female, plural neuter; nominative, genetive, dative, accusative, ablative, vocative, etc. (Iudaeus, Iudaea, Iudaeum, Iudaei, Iudaeorum, Iudaearum, Iudaeo, Iudaeis, Iudaeum, Iudaeam, Iudaeos, Iudaeas, Iudaee) Unlike moderners they weren't obsessed with brevity, they were obsessed with accuracy. They absolutely did not refer to everyone in Judaea simply as "Ius", which is what the Latin form of "Jews" would be.

"Strictly speaking, it is incorrect to call an ancient Israelite a Jew, or to call a contemporary Jew an Israelite or Hebrew." -The Jewish Almanac, 1980, p.3

God's people are the Israelites, the 12 tribes of Israel. They temporarily split into two kingdoms, ten tribes in the northern kingdom of Israel, and two tribes in the southern kingdom of Judah aka Judaea. Less than 1/6th of Israelites were known as Judaeans for less than 1/3rd of the time the Israelite nation has existed, and many non Israelites went by that name for various amounts of time. It was a temporary identity for a fraction of Israelites that's no longer useful.

No Israelites were known as "Jews".

When provided with evidence that refutes the Judaean/Jew claim, some attempt to argue that "Jew" was a nickname for the tribe of Judah, however that's NEVER the way it's used in Bible translations. They've attempted to usurp the identity of the ancient Judaeans, and they're stuck with it. We have centuries of Bible translations with the tribe of Judah always being rendered Judah in the Old Testament, and Juda in the New. The word "Jews" has ONLY been used to replace the name for the inhabitants of Judah/Judaea…And since Judaea didn't exist until circa 900 BC, neither it, or inhabitants of it appear in scripture until 2 Kings 16, because that's when the text covers the period of time when the Israelite civil war occured and Judaea appeared as a kingdom. There couldn't have been any Judaeans prior to that time because there was no kingdom of Judaea for anyone to inhabit.

The Bible is Hebrew and/or Israelite, as well as Christian. The faith outlined in the Old Testament was never called "Judaism" by Israelites, or anyone prior to at least the 1st century AD. The religion of the Pharisees based on illegitimate "Oral Traditions" that supposedly superceded the written scriptures was the first system to be called Judaism (Ioudaismos), and ultimately developed into the writings known as the Talmud. The only time the word Judaism appears in the entire Bible is when Paul uses it twice in the same discourse in reference to his time as a Pharisee.

The Old Testament faith is simply pre incarnation Christianity, as every one of its pages points towards the Christ to come.
