That Titanic anecdote is a little incorrect, if you watch the documentary "Ghosts of the Abyss" you'll see that Jim and Bill weren't together in the sub eating lunch when 9/11 happened. Jim was in the sub with a few other crew and when they resurfaced Jim asks Bill, "So what's this big news you have for me?" and then Bill tells him, "Jim, it's the worst terrorist attack in history." Those quoted lines might not be exact but that's basically how it went down, it's shown in the documentary.
