There's a way to get to the basis of many of these allegories. I'll let people know if they want to. It has much broader implications, such as how it proves itself.
As a taste, there's how water is symbolic of words. This is because words can either make the intellectual live or die — and men, as opposed to animals, are intellectual. So, water is the life-giving agent that flows. In the creation stories around that part of the world, the primordial stuff was the water, and it was half sweet and half bitter. They were divided to waters above and waters below. God was making heavenly words and earthly words, dividing them by a principle. Then, when God was making dry land, a home for standing animals (head to the heavens, feet on a foundation), He took them out of the waters below. In the Sumerian/Babylonian beginnings, and the extinct Leviathan myth, the Lord kills the sea dragon, and uses the body to make these two. It is out of the words of men that God is making the kingdom on the earth, and this is equivalent to what Robert was saying about the wealth hidden in poverty, which comes from Thomas. This is also why the Spirit is depicted as life-giving waters, the nations are depicted as waters (because they are accounted as tongues, each of them — because they are called "kindreds, nations, and tongues"), and why someone who believes wicked teachings is called a "bitter root": they are a root of the tree that was given bitter waters to drink, and not only do they die, but they cause those who believe their words to die. The "bodies" of the waters above and waters below are birds and fish, respectively. This is why, as Robert has noted elsewhere, birds can be understood as angels. The words from above are instantiated in them, just as those in whom a tongue is instantiated is a fish. Like Jesus said, "I will make you fishers of men", taking them out of the talk and ways of the world. Also, God calls Pharaoh a fish, and Ninevah was, if you can believe it, the large fish that swallowed Jonah for three days (for it was a three-day walk from one end to the other as he was prophesying).
God has been taking advantage of the words of the world from the beginning, and takes what is lies and makes something true out of it, which is His good and loving urge to make life. If you go from the VERY beginning, you see that same paradigm consistently across the board. Then, when you know the way of life, you'll see how to make people live. It is because we are intellectual and moral creatures that we have not yet overcome, but we have to have the intellectual and moral equivalent of love (as it is with eroticism in the animal nature), which is to make life. This is in Christ, as he has become the collective of all those who are going to life. They will understand that they came from God, the living one, because they live — and then, knowing this, that they are children of the living god, they will understand that it is a lack of knowledge which has prevented them from reaching life. When they see this, they won't have a lack of knowledge anymore, and they will know what is in the heart of man and what is good for them.
