She’s Hispanic…so technically and literally she is Native. No she’s not Apache. But she is Native. Her sisters can deny it all they want but it’s true. Their fathers family and ancestry came from Mexico. Mexicans are Indigenous. I know they like to deny it because of certain historical issues but every culture did those things at one point or another. It’s time for them to cut the denialism and embrace their indigenousness.
What would she have gained from lying about her identity? Let's say she wasn't Apache/Yaqui. She was still of Mexican descent, which has indigenous blood. Her sisters could just have been trying to tarnish her name over some bitter unsettled fewed.
She continued her activism for Native American issues, including healthcare and unemployment, and produced films about Native Americans.
What she did at the oscars required bravery, and for a woman at those times, im sure it was very nerve-wracking. She lived a noble life. May she rest in power!
