  1. The early mountain men told some amazing stories. One actually pulled on the bear’s tongue, and lived. Common practice was to turn your knife edge-up, stabbing, and pulling up to disembowel… if possible. In the late 1950s perhaps a Ruger ad reported a man who went out at night to investigate noise at his garbage cans. He shoved his Ruger Mark I .22 automatic in his waistband, and when he got there a large bear he hadn’t seen stood up in front of him. He found himself standing between its outstretched arms, and did the only thing he could do, which was to place the muzzle under the bear’s chin and empty the magazine. He survived uninjured. A man was employed by the government (not publicized) to cull the grizzly bear population in Montana. He had a Colt single action New Frontier .45 Colt, in which he loaded lead bullets upside down. Once he identified an occupied den, he hid behind a bush in front of it, and sent his dog into the cave. After the dog came tearing out, followed by an enraged grizzly, he would stand up, and the bear would too, roaring – at which point he would put one bullet through the roof of its mouth. End of story. In recent years, a seasoned, lifelong hunter and IIRC Game Warden, was pulled off his horse In Wyoming, and eaten. When they found and dispatched the bear, it had his body parts in its stomach. It’s fur was also soaked in “Bear Spray.” I was a personal friend with Jim Fowler of TVs “Wild Kingdom,” who I met at the Explorers Club headquarters in NYC. He is the one who brought the wild animals on the Johnny Carson show. I told him that I was planning to shoot a Super16 mm Documentary in the mountains of Montenegro, but was very concerned about being attacked by the numerous wild boar. I mentioned the idea of using pepper spray on the ground as a barrier, while I waited for the sunrise over the small, ancient stone houses. “What if they like it?! We had a serious problem with Polar Bears in Churchill. We tried everything: firearms, firehoses, fireworks, and pepper spray. We sprayed it on the ground and they rolled around in it!” -M Astronaut Scott Carpenter to Marko: “Never panic. As soon as you do you’re already dead, and won’t think of the one thing that will save your life.”
