you most definitely can have enormous control over your kids personality. you just cant do it in western countries like the usa where kids spend more time away from the family unit then with. case and point is indigenous people all share the same ethos unlike westerners.
What I realised about narcissism that runs in a family is, the kids that watch their father or parents that are narcissistic they actually learn how to hide it better and mask it better.

Narcisim is a coping mechanism/ surviving strategy for a burden traumatized soul. A child that had to much to bear.
