I COULD BE WRONG but if I understand the math correctly, the mountains captured in the world record for long distance photography should not be visible. The top of the most distant mountain should be about a half-mile below the curvature of the Earth.

There are THOUSANDS of feet of that mountain range hidden. You can only see a few thousand feet of the top. Why do you mock an explanation of refraction that allows us to occasionally see a small portion that should be hidden, but so openly embrace explanations of refraction that would have to routinely hide many thousands of feet of a mountain range?
