One of the most terrifying thing about the movie Incantation is how it incorporates esoteric Buddhist culture into its lore. We get temples, villages, symbols, chants and hand symbols that to the untrained eye, may seem like they belong in some rural, religious cult. And indeed, it does have that effect of making the whole story seem more plausible – like there could be this vengeful goddess preying on mortals or that there is some ancient curse that’s so obscure no one has heard of it. As we dive into today’s episode, we’ll explore how much of the movie was inspired from real world mythology and culture, as well as establishing some links to a pre-existing deity that might be comparable to the ominous Mother Buddha!

Your Illustrations are gorgeous, extremely well done👍🏼 As for the curse, I’ve heard a story about Vietnam Soldiers clearing tunnels from the Vietkong, when they stumbled upon something odd. A tunnel that lead into a small hall, and a rotten stench emerging from it. The US Troops were forced to blow all the tunnels up, thus they ventured deeper, until they reached the chamber. A cloth covered an entrance, a „stairwell“ lead them much deeper below. The soldiers stumbled upon what seemed to be civilians, rocking back and forth, looking at an altar, a bronze figure, woman with the lower half of an octopus. The civilians did not respond to the soldiers, seemed to be heavily traumatized. The stench seemed to get stronger in the room, but nothing in there could’ve caused it. Freaked out by this, the US Troops planted the explosives and destroyed the tunnel system. What kind of weird deity that was, I don’t know… but it must’ve been chilling to see this
The destruction power of Mahakali and Mahakala goes in line with the other two main deties
1. Brahma- the creator
2. Vishnu- the preserver
So you can not have creation without destruction and you can not maintain creation without preservation
The things that makes me wonder until now about this movie is, why did those villagers want to be curses and refuse blessings? If they know that the deity is evil, then why bother worship and serve it?
