The tree of life at Genesis 3:22 was a literal tree with fruit on it and was God's guarantee of life everlasting for whoever ate of it's fruit, even if they were "sinners", that was not initially off-limits to Adam and Eve, for at Genesis 2:16, 17 it says:
"Jehovah (God's name, see Isa 12:2, KJV) God also gave this command to the man: “From every tree of the garden (including the tree of life) you may eat to satisfaction. But as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad, you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will certainly die.”
Jehovah God had set aside "the tree of knowledge of good and bad" as his own, that though simple in nature, and in which all the other fruit trees of the garden were readily available to eat from, that established his right to set moral boundaries for humans, and also acted as a test to the newly created human couple, whereby Eve told "the serpent" (who later was given the name Satan, that means "resistor"), that even touching its fruit would bring death.(Gen 3:1-3)
Upon the rebellion in the garden of Eden, Jehovah passed sentence on the once perfect human couple along with the once perfect "serpent" who initiated the rebellion (see Eze 28:13-15), but now imperfect and rebels against his sovereignty, with the Genesis account saying: "Then Jehovah God said to the serpent (not the literal snake that Satan used, but to Satan himself):
“Because you have done this, you are the cursed one out of all the domestic animals and out of all the wild animals of the field. On your belly you will go, and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity (or hatred) between you and the (symbolic) woman and between your offspring and her offspring.(see Rev 12:1-5)"
"He (Jesus Christ, as the premier "offspring" of the symbolic "woman", the body of the loyal angels) will crush your head (or destroy Satan by permanent deathblow, by means of God's heavenly Kingdom, see 1 John 3:8), and you will strike him in the heel (by Satan having Jesus executed on a stake, Acts 2:32; 5:30, 31, whereby Jesus was resurrected as a "life-giving spirit", 1 Cor 15:45).”
Jehovah further told Adam as "the head of the house", that "because you listened to your wife’s voice and ate from the tree concerning which I gave you this command, ‘You must not eat from it,’ cursed is the ground on your account."
"In pain you will eat its produce all the days of your life. It will grow thorns and thistles for you, and you must eat the vegetation of the field. In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return.”(Gen 3:14, 15, 17-19)
Adam and Eve lost the privilege of eating from "the tree of life", that would have guaranteed everlasting life even as rebels. So, to prevent them from trying to take and eat fruit from the tree of life, the Genesis accounts says that "Jehovah God then said:
“Here the man has become like one of us in knowing good and bad. Now in order that he may not put his hand out and take fruit also from the tree of life and eat and live forever,—” With that Jehovah God expelled him from the garden of Eʹden to cultivate the ground from which he had been taken."
"So he drove the man out, and he posted at the east of the garden of Eʹden the cherubs and the flaming blade of a sword that was turning continuously (or for some 1,656 years until the Global Deluge destroyed the garden of Eden) to guard the way to the tree of life."(Gen 3:22-24)
Is what the tree of life represented, everlasting life, still available after the mutiny in the garden of Eden some 6,000 years ago ? Yes, but a person must do as Jesus told Nicodemus: "For (Jehovah) God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son (showing Jesus as NOT God), so that everyone exercising faith ("exercising faith", Greek pisteuo eis, meaning "faith in motion" and NOT just "believing on the Lord and you will be saved", see James 2:18-26) in him might not be destroyed but have everlasting life."
"For God did not send his Son into the world for him to judge the world, but for the world to be saved through him. Whoever exercises faith in him is not to be judged (adversely, for destruction). Whoever does NOT exercise faith has been judged already (having NO "works of faith", and is awaiting being destroyed), because he has not exercised faith in the name of the only-begotten Son of God (by carefully following what Jesus stipulated, see John12:47-50)."(John 3:16-18)
So, at Revelation 22, when the "curse" of Adamic sin (Rom 5:12) has been completely removed for all who "exercised faith" in Jesus Christ as Jehovah's "only-begotten Son", carefully adhering to his words, such as Matthew 28:19, 20, to "go and make disciples", "from house to house" (Acts 20:20), with the theme of God's Kingdom (Matt 24:14), being "NO PART of the world" with its deadly, dirty and divisive politics, showing agape love (John 15:17-19), honoring Jehovah (1 Sam 2:30; Mal 4:2), then these are the ones who will symbolically eat from "the trees of life" and live forever.(Rev 22:1-5)
