In 2016 I understood why the things he said appealed to voters, especially those who probably felt disenfranchised with the process for a long time. After years of feeling looked down on by the establishment I can see why the things he said during that time had to be refreshing for a lot of people. I specifically remember watching a documentary made by Robert Reich of all people where he spoke with a Missouri family who were very pro Bernie sanders. But one thing that was striking was that they said if Bernie didn’t win that they’d probably vote for Trump because of how desperate they were to see a change in the political system. To me that was pretty eye opening that while the things he said may have appealed on a policy level for many but there also were a lot of people who probably voted for him just to shake the system up.
As for the idea that he was ever going to bring back manufacturing and the like that always seemed obvious for me to be political posturing. I’m not sure how someone would reasonably believe that a man who outsourced production for essentially all of his merchandise during his business career would suddenly be the advocate for producing products in the United States. I remember one time during an interview of some kind he was going into one of his outsourcing rants only for the interviewer to flip over a Trump branded tie to show it had been made overseas. I’ve never been able to grasp how it wasn’t obvious to people that the posturing for making things here was always just that, posturing. But in the end I always felt that people made mistakes in how they tried to portray Trump and those who supported him by blindly trying to brush them all away as racist or some other lazy label. The main population was never willing to objectively look to why he may have been resonating with some voters for genuinely normal things and took it lightly to their detriment.
