The fall of Babylon, the city richest of all time, occurred more than 4,300 years after its foundation. The ancient city of Babylon, which existed in antiquity, continues to fascinate the world with its history, wealth, and myths. Over the years, some of the most famous kings and generals of antiquity passed through Babylon, such as Hammurabi, Nebuchadnezzar, and Alexander the Great. Hammurabi created in Babylon the first written code of laws in humanity. Nebuchadnezzar is credited with the construction of the famous Hanging Gardens, and Alexander wanted to rebuild the city to make it his capital. However, life did not give him time to realize this plan.

The birth and peak of Babylon have different versions of its foundation. Sargon, the first founder of the Akkadian Empire, erected the city around the 10th century BCE. According to the Bible, Babylon was founded by Nimrod, son of Cush, who ruled in the land of Shinar in Mesopotamia. According to Genesis, the first Babylonian dynasty began with the monarch Sumuabum around 1894 BCE. The main ruler of this dynasty was Hammurabi, known for the famous code that bears his name, the oldest written laws in humanity.
With the death of Hammurabi in 1750 BCE, the city began to decline, and in 1531 BCE, it was plundered by Murci. From 115 BCE, a period of instability began with the rule of the Kassite dynasty, the Arameans, and the Chaldeans, until Babylon was conquered by the Assyrian Empire in 713 BCE, led by Ashurbanipal, the king who brought the Assyrian Empire to its peak. In 668 BCE, however, it was Nabopolassar, a Chaldean, who reigned between 605 and 560 BCE, who transformed the city into one of the most splendid in antiquity. He is credited with the construction of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
