Why would the bible need to be specific about geography and astronomy? It's irrelevant.
I don't think Kent Hovind is a shill or controlled opposition as some are indicating here. I think he falls into the category that I have seen many otherwise brilliant religious leaders fall into, which is that they refuse to go back and reframe what they believe based on new evidence because they have so much time invested in their world views and the premises that they are based on. I find it bizarre that Hovind resorts to "science" to defend his position of a globular Earth, when he has spent his entire career debunking so-called science on other issues. He should already know that so-called science is not an authority to base anything on. He cites scientific evidence for the parts that he believes, but utterly refutes it and discredits it for the things that he doesn't believe. When he was debating an atheist or an evolutionist , he has no problem looking at the Bible and deciding that the Bible says something different, and therefore evolutionists and atheists must be false in their beliefs. However, when it comes to cosmology, he won't hold himself to the same standards. That is truly sad. I have seen many ministers over the years that I respected because of their teachings on certain aspects of the Bible, become people that I could no longer support because they refused to go further on various doctrinal beliefs that they held that contradicted scripture. I believe that Hovind is sincere, but, like they've said in the past, he is sincerely wrong. I also hope and pray that he is able to see the error of his ways, and come to an understanding of a more complete truth than the one he currently has. If he could use his demonstrated God-given abilities in defense of true biblical cosmology, he would be a very powerful force.
