  1. I must give a couple corrections about Andersonville. First, the prison camp was properly named Camp Sumter, not Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter was the harbor fort in Charleston, SC, that Confederate forces fired on in April 1861, opening the Civil War. Camp Sumter is more commonly known as Andersonville because of the nearby town of Andersonville, GA.

    Also, when the water spring erupted, it was not in the middle of the camp. Instead, it was off to the side beyond the deadline that the prisoners were not allowed to cross, else they would be shot. To get water from the new spring, the prisoners had to tie a cup or a pot to a long stick and scoop up the water. But soon after, Confederate guards made provision for the prisoners to reach the spring and distribute water.
