Oda Nobunaga: The First Unifier of Japan (Japanese History Explained) FYTube

Oda Nobunaga didn’t start out as the fearful and respected clan leader that he was known for. But instead, he was a ‘weird’ child who showed no signs of being a capable leader at all. That would soon change though when one of his father’s closest retainers committed Seppuku, shocking Nobunaga into fulfilling his destiny in unifying Japan under his rule.

  1. One incredibly fascinating aspect of Nobunaga is how he conducted himself outside the battlefield. On paper, he is a demon made real. Ruthless, brutal and merciless. I remember reading some history books that mentioned that he was feared not just by his enemies, but his allies and close friends as well.

But then you get the Nobunaga away from all the wars and bloodshed. A fascination with western culture and religion, even allowing western religions to be practiced and preached in his territory. Taking a liking to the black man who would become the first black samurai, Yasuke, under him. Supposedly, Nobunaga was the only one who showed respect towards Yasuke. Then there's the stories of him hearing his men badmouthing their own wives and personally writing letters to said wives expressing sympathy and shame at his men's behaviour and language towards them.

Like, the guy was terrifying. But you don't unify a country that has been at war with itself for so long without crossing lines we can't even imagine. And yet, in spite of all the scheming, politics, bloodshed and betrayal, what little we "know" (citations needed of course) of his personal life indicates that he may have been a very pleasant individual.
