Oda Nobunaga: The First Unifier of Japan (Japanese History Explained) FYTube

Oda Nobunaga didn’t start out as the fearful and respected clan leader that he was known for. But instead, he was a ‘weird’ child who showed no signs of being a capable leader at all. That would soon change though when one of his father’s closest retainers committed Seppuku, shocking Nobunaga into fulfilling his destiny in unifying Japan under his rule.

  1. Nobunaga was perhaps the greatest daimyo of the sengoku era….. yet his treatment of slaughtering the children, women and elderly monks makes him a mixed historical figure. Nobunaga’s treatment of Mitsuhide was also shameful. Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Nobunaga’s general learned greatly under Nobunaga, becoming a great daimyo as did Ieyasu Tokugawa. Takeda Shingen was another great daimyo, but he didn’t appreciate the power of skillfully used gun strategy. I think also we must remember that the culture of Japan in that time is vastly different than modern times in that the samurai culture did not place high value on the lives of normal people….. commoners could be killed at any time for the slightest infractions such as not bowing to a lord or even a samurai.

  2. I’m a big fan of Nobunaga. Even if he did unite Japan he couldn’t have the title of Shogun since he didn’t descend from the Kamakura family but that wouldn’t matter to him because that was only a title and Nobunaga didn’t care about things and people so as long as there was merit in something or someone.
