  1. Ieyasu was a cunning tactician and strategist- Hideyoshi was so impressed after the Komaki campaign he declared that he had to have Ieyasu as a follower and that killing him would be a waste of talent.

  2. There's a parable about the unifiers of Japan. Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Ieyasu Tokugawa. They are each given a caged bird and the winner would be the one who convinced the bird to sing first. Oda said "I'll kill the bird if it doesn't sing." Hideyoshi said "I would force the bird to sing". Ieyasu said "I will wait until the bird wishes to sing."

  3. After Akechi Mitsuhide assassinated Nobunaga, Ieyasu found himself behind enemy lines and hunted by the Akechi and was trying to get back to friendly territory hidden in a hay cart. Akechi soldiers were searching the area and an Akechi Samurai thrust his spear into the straw. The spear pierced Ieyasu's thigh. Not losing a moment, he grabbed a piece of cloth and wrapped it around the spear tip and when the Akechi samurai withdrew the spear, he wiped it clean of blood which would have otherwise revealed his presence in the straw pile. He had THAT level of composure.
