  1. The idea that tribes had many different leaders per situation can be seen as late as the mid-to-late 1800s with different bands of the Chiracahua Apaches. Geronimo could never be a chief due to his bloodline, yet he was war chief for different raids that he proposed. And that includes leading Cochise, chief of his band, during such raids.

    At that point, the western Apache hadn’t settled down save for being assigned to reservations in Arizona.
