What did Jesus mean when he declared, ‘I never knew you, depart from me’? Jesus clarified, ‘Then I will tell them plainly, I never knew you; away from me, you evildoers’ (Matthew 7:23). Jesus’ most famous teaching, The Sermon on the Mount, targeted the hearts of his listeners. He spoke directly to his disciples. It might seem odd to hear that even our omniscient Lord admits to not knowing something or someone. However, Jesus was referring to a type of knowledge related to personal relationships, not intellectual understanding.
In concluding The Sermon on the Mount, Jesus issued a final warning about true faith. He said, ‘There will be false Christian prophets disguised as harmless’ (Matthew 7:15, Amplified Bible). ‘Beware of false prophets, teachers who come to you in sheep’s clothing, seeming gentle and innocent but inwardly are ravenous wolves.’ Even if they use religious language and demonstrate power, they do not truly belong to the Lord. One might appear Christian to others yet still be deemed an evildoer by God and cast away from His presence, as mentioned in verse 23. Only those who follow God’s will and are recognized by Him will enter Heaven.
It’s not about how much we know God but whether God knows us, as Paul explained: ‘The person who loves God is known by Him.’ The Lord tends His flock like a Shepherd (Isaiah 40:11) and knows who His sheep are (John 10:14). ‘I am the Good Shepherd; I know my sheep, and my sheep know me.’ They have a deep personal relationship with me. Those ominous words ‘I never knew you, depart from me, you who practice lawlessness’ demonstrate that Jesus is indeed omniscient. He didn’t know them in the way He would if they were His followers, but He knew their hearts filled with iniquity. Isaiah’s condemnation of hypocrisy fits this group well: ‘These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me’ (Isaiah 29:13).
The wrongdoers Jesus does not recognize are false Christians and false teachers (Revelation 22:15). ‘Outside are the dogs, those who do evil—the morally corrupt, sorcerers with their intoxicating drugs and magical arts, the immoral, the perverts, the abusers, the adulterers, the murderers, the idolaters, and all who love and practice falsehood, deception, cheating.’ Jesus warns that one day He will say to a group of religious practitioners, ‘I never knew you.’ God takes no joy in sending people to Hell (2 Peter 3:8, Amplified Bible). ‘The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.’
At the Judgment, they try to justify themselves as worthy of heaven based on their works, but this will not suffice. Though they claim to do all these good works in Christ’s name, they fail in performing the only work of God that counts—having faith in Him whom He has sent. Thus, Jesus, the righteous judge, condemns them to eternal separation from Him. A popular biblical commentator noted that this warning of Jesus applies to people who say, ‘Lord, Lord,’ but whose spiritual life has nothing to do with their daily life. They go to church, perhaps fulfill some daily religious duties, but sin against God and man like anyone else. There are those who talk like angels but live like demons, who have the smooth tongue of Jacob but the rough hands of Esau.

  1. When Gifts are given by Lord Jesus it's never taken away. So if you are given gifts it still keeps on working even if person becomes corrupt. The people are healed, prophecy is fulfilled…… But person himself is in sin. But the gifts still work. So those person are in danger of fire.
False Christian and false prophets are promoting false doctrine of bible like they will say burn incense can make you pure.
But signs and wonders are authority of believers and are gift of God. But it will not assure heaven. 😢

  2. ✝️You're absolutely correct. The term "fake Christians" has always been challenging to me however. There's a difference between being religious and being saved. I'm interested in learning your perception in this matter.💐
