  1. No school would ever have allowed schoolchildren to spend the school day watching mini-televisions all day. It's sheer common sense. Smartphones are at least analogous (though they are so much more) and eminently deserve banishing from the business of what school is about. It makes no more sense for a child to spend the school day getting distracted by a smartphone than it would have made for a child, in the old days, to read comic books or listen to the radio or even to play jacks while lessons were going on. Those things simply wouldn't be tolerated. There's no sane reason to tolerate smartphones either.

  2. The seeds of these things appear, under the radar but not invisible to the sensitive, very, very early. I can see these trends going back all the way to the rage to get little girls' ears pierced even from virtual infancy. Why? Because it appealed to the mothers' vanity (the infants certainly weren't interested). And it's exactly that mindset, where children are mere extensions of the parents' ego-needs, like walking security blankets, that leads to parents recoiling violently at the notion that their children should lead lives in ANY way different from their own–"What, you're saying there's something WRONG with the way I live?!" Of course, the instant full-on attack-mode ("You've offended me, hater!") only reinforces the self-righteousness ("Because I can get in your face and scream my victimhood, you are ipso facto criminally offensive.")
