Maria Holl of Noerdlingen is an amazing case. She was arrested for witchcraft, was tortured 62 times, but she still insisted she was innocent. This swung public opinion in her favour and they found a way to get her released. She had to remain under house arrest and sign a waiver against legal action against her prosecutors, but she still beat the odds and escaped with her life. Today she is the town heroine and there is a fountain dedicated to her.
