  1. I believe that the use of lions, in particular throughout the ancient world, was a strong warning to would-be invaders. Just as we've considered lions the "kings of the jungle" for thousands of years lions symbolized the strongest force on earth. The Assyrian stone gates in the Louvre Museum in Paris (8th C B.C.) that guarded their palaces show human giants holding lions in their arms as if to say, "Look how powerful our warriors are. Do not enter!" Remember, most everyone except the nobility (males) was illiterate.

  2. Homo sapiens are 250 000 years old. It takes 12 000 years to move from hunter gatherers to modern civilization. We had 2 ice ages around 20000 years warm window after first one. Similar conditions, so "they were just trying to survive" doesn't seem true to me. Of course they were but there must have been something apart from it. This is my take. Why do I think so? Antikythera mechanism was created 2nd century bc. Humans are creative.
What Graham is trying to say, there is a possibility of culture that has preserved accumulated knowledge (maybe not 100 000 years old knowledge) and passed it down through time. He suggests that they were building sites that were matching star constellations to indicate time of constuction. The same way you write "X was here" for some reason this what humans do, we mark ourself in time and space. Vikings did it, you did it, i did it, gobleki tepe did it, pyramids did it. Such culture most likely has arisen in warmer climate regions. "Well people are smart, they couldn't just forget how to farm", we forgot key ingredient of roman concrete, which is sea water and rediscovered it thanks to modern day technology.
Another key ingredient of his thesis is a disaster part. Which barried evidence of civilization, particularly water. How many cultural collapses has happened and what were the consequences?
It's not about colonialism or patronising. It's about keeping human progress constant.
This thesis I am willing to accept.
