I think the theories of the what happened to or became of the Garden depend heavily on what Humanity was going through at the time. Eden being destroyed echos the loss of African and Mesopotamian Grasslands over the last 20 000 years and is likely a hold over of oral tradition made into a theological myth. Eden being hidden echos the Ancient Civilisations romanticising and elaborating on Lost/Hidden Civilisations (Atlantas for example.) And Eden being just a spiritual Allegory is just a result of our more modern understanding of natural laws, earth sciences, etc over the last 1000+ years. If a myth like Eden and our Species manages to make it out into Space likely they will have theological versions of the Garden being on another more fertile world far away that was lost and/or destroyed since Eden just seems to be an idealised version of what Humanity thinks of as their cradle of life. (Fertile Savannahs and Flood Plains to Righteous, Moral, and Powerful Civilisations to Natural Law in a Perfect System)
If the character known as God was a human male, we would call him a bad father, but his Godhood grants him a pass.
Why create problems, and get angry at your people for facing those problems you made.

The question really is, what was the "fruit" because I don't think the fruit was an actual fruit….it might sound gross….but I think the "tree" the "fruit" the "seed" all has something to do with sex…yes….sex…why was Adam and eve embarrassed for being naked?
