In the moments following Jesus’ crucifixion, a profound realization dawned on a Roman soldier, the Centurion, who had been overseeing the execution. The Centurion, along with those guarding Jesus, witnessed extraordinary events—an earthquake and other unnatural occurrences—that left them terrified and filled with awe. It was then that the Centurion, a commanding officer in the Roman army, declared with conviction, “Truly, this was the Son of God” (Matthew 27:54).

As an officer who commanded a century, a unit of 80 to 100 soldiers, the Centurion was a man of authority, discipline, and battlefield experience. As Jesus hung on the cross, taking His final breath, the world around them began to change in remarkable ways. The sky darkened, and the earth quaked, signaling the profound nature of the moment. The Centurion, a figure of Roman power and pagan beliefs, was moved by what he witnessed. The crucifixion, usually a grim display of Roman justice, became something much more in the Centurion’s eyes.
