Gautama Buddha gives the message of equality, tolerance and understanding without bowing down to anything or anyone.
As per a Jataka Tale: Buddha once convinced a serpent to follow the Dharma and not bite people as it is wont. But when a group of people badly beat up the serpents he quietly suns himself on the side of the road, the serpent goes back to the Buddha and asks him, "Now what is to be done? "
At which the Buddha simply smiles softly and tells the serpent: "I told you not to bite people, but I never told you not to hiss at them".
For more knowledge, Siddhartha was given proper education including training in Martial Arts. (as he was a student and a prince of Royal Family and so he was trained by his father who was a King).
As goes the saying in Gita" You must never resort to Physical Violence, but if you enemy deliberately tries to kill you, it is ur Sharma to protect urself and your Friends and Family, your Home and Your Country, and Kill or Be killed. These r Great warriors and Monks, Warrior monks, My Greatest Respects to them,!!!
To Defend, you must be CAPABKE of Defending, to be capable, you must make Yourself capable of fighting and defending, you must not seek thrill or pleasure in killing innocent men, but only For Greater Good!!!
Buddha: Do not kill.
