That order was given at the battle of Bunker Hill in June, 1775. The reason is that the defenders had limited ammunition, and their officers wanted to make sure that every shot fired against British infantry would count. George Washington was not present at Bunker Hill. The Continental Congress had given Washington command of the Continental Army shortly before the battle, but he did not take command until after the battle. The identity of the officer who gave that famous order remains unknown.
