This simulation thing should be taken metaphorically since we simulate things throughout our life.

We're in a matrix-simulation. Our real bodies and minds are functioning. We're kept at extremely fictional anatomical construct, to be controlled. Our brains and bodies don't function this way, and total memory recall is basic. Fading memory and deja-vu and stuff like that is matrix propaganda. Memory pops up and fades and you're trying to recall it? Matrix. Can't remember what you did last week? Matrix. Someone told you their name and you forget? Matrix. In the real world the body doesn't work like this. Slave matrix, slave parameters.
