This band is known in the industry to be the WORST and most unfriendly group to work with. Fact.
He was probably making fun of them because he knew that they sucked so bad and always have.
This is a touchy subject for a lot of Black people, like myself, from the south. There are people from the North who believe all Southern white people are Racist. They are NOT! Most southern white people since the 1970s are like Chris Robinson or the Allman Brothers. They grew up listening to R&B, played with black singers/musicians, and turned their music into Southern Rock. So when a Northerner makes a comment, as Rick Rubin did to Chris Robinson, it just comes off as beyond ignorant.
I remember seeing these hippies every day for two weeks in Nashville when they were recording part of their first Album. I was a kid then and saw several bands in and out of that Studio. They were the only one of one hundred bands I saw back then that made it. The Black Crows weren't even the best band I saw back then. It just goes to show Music is an industry. It makes no difference how good you are… you have to play the game.
Rick Rubin is a complete fraud . Calling him a "producer " is laughable. He's always had AMAZING engineers doing all the work …and he just stamps his name on it
