Progressivism is a broad philosophy. They're many ideologies within in. When Americans refer to liberalism, they're referring to Modern American liberalism which derives from Social liberalism. Social liberalism is very much progressive.
The problem we have run into, is we have our own crazy wing that calls everyone and everything racist or sexist if they disagree with them. But that is not the vast majority of progressives.
