  1. 10:00 The world doesn't care what you believe and doesn't treat you fairly. It doesn't give a damn about my wellbeing. Okay, "I'm being treated unfairly. Isn't better for me to think that someone is actively being unfair to me than just assume that's the way it is? Because then I can blame it."

This is one of the most simple yet profound truths behind the conspiracy theories. Add the social benefits of belonging to a fellowship, and you have a powerful draw into an impenetrable dogma. They feel safe, seen, and included in that bubble.

Great conversation. I'm pairing this with the TED talk by the "founder" of the Birds Aren't Real movement. He conducted an amazing social experiment proving how willing people are to join a group of like-minded people even when it's clearly a farce. It reached the point where the bird deniers gained enough momentum to continue despite the revelation that it was a hoax cult.

I suppose the same could be said about The Flying Spaghetti Monster and the Force. They're great as proxies in arguments. They're fun fiction. But they also have ardent followers who don't make the distinction between reality and fiction with known origins. Scientology and Mormonism fall into that category. Millions of people follow these religions when you can point unerringly at the dudes who made them up. I've never understood that phenomenon.

  2. Right off the bat, love is easily explained by sciences, plural. Evolutionary science, biology, archeology, social science, etc. It's ascribed. It's chemical. It's socially reinforced. The definition has changed based on culture. Love isn't a mythical, unknowable quantity. On the contrary, it's one of the most studied and understood human traits.
