His son did butcher the story, I believe eastwood was going home to see family, asked a fighter pilot for a ride home, because he couldn’t afford or find a commercial flight. He jumped in the back wheee there was no seat, the door swung open and he passed out by lack of oxygen. The pilot noticed he was low on gas and his oxygen did the same. He had to crash land the plane in the ocean.
