  1. Kek is from World of Warcraft (video game by Blizzard), Alliance and Horde don't speak each other's language, so when Horde writes "lol" it comes out to an Alliance player as "kek" – this is the most widely known translated word within the game because of how common it is, so Alliance and Horde started saying "kek" interchangeably with "lol".

In Korean, lol is not "kek" it is "kk" or "kkk", so "kek" being understood as "lol" is 100% definitely rooted in World of Warcraft, and even if some relation to Korean translation, it is only secondary.
Kekistan is about "doing it for the lols" so to speak – for shits and giggles. It's just a troll group, there's no larger, encompassing social agenda for it any more than there is some agenda behind a meme (which, there is, there's an agenda behind everything, but some things more so than others).

It's kind of like typing "F" for respect – the roots are from video games, particularly a specific Call of Duty game on PC. There is a funeral scene where you are observing from the character you are playing and at some point there's an interactive part and asks you to "press 'F' to pay respects"

Kind of late to write this so many years later, but I'm listening to this episode for the first time
