  1. Having practiced Aikido for over twenty years, It can be a very misunderstood martial art. I believe the Aikido has become watered down and largely ineffective. To say it is a "fighting" style, would be incorrect. It was developed as to "not fight" or struggle. You let the attacker do the fighting or struggling. Sounds great in theory. The problem is that Aikido relies on a few important things. Get off the line of attack, a committed attack, and unbalancing the attacker. Aikido will not work unless you have a committed attack. Aikido will not work unless you unbalance your attacker. Try and unbalance an experienced grappler (Judo, Jujutsu, wrestling, etc.). It's not easy at all. I do believe the Aikido that O'Sensei (Morihei Ueshiba) taught in before WWII is more effective and applicable than post WWII Aikido that is practiced. I love Aikido. I loved Steven Seagal's early movies; but I am very dismayed at the fact the martial art I love is ineffective. If, I were to begin, again, my Aikido practice, I might try Lenny Sly's dojo, He seems to have a good grasp on what it takes to make Aikido a legitimate combative martial discipline and deal with proficient fighters from other disciplines. I love Wing Chun also. I saw an early UFC fight (way back in the early 90s Gracie days) where a proficient Wing Chun stylist was taken to the ground and it was over for him in a matter of seconds. That said, I have seen Emin Boztepe do some amazing things and he seems to have taken Wing Chun, or Wing Tzun, as he spells it, and has worked to evolve it to be adaptive to other styles where ground fighting is paramount. I also think that while MMA constantly evolved styles with times, Aikido needs to do the same thing to be relevant.

  2. Tai Chi is like Yoga but Taijichuan or “great-ultimate-fist’s” original style has been lost to time mostly. Like no fight ever should waiting for “chi” to center be a thing; that’s a death waiting to happen. But I would like to clarify that Tai Chi wasn’t always just a Yoga thing. It was about fighting, grappling and wrestling.
