  1. These guys really don’t get it. If it wasn’t so sad what they are saying it would be funny.
Do they really think this is about pulling yourself up by your boot straps.
Please people with depression or have someone in their lives with depression get psychiatric care for yourself or someone you know with depression.
To the people who think running around the block a couple times a week or eating your fruits and veggies is a cure for depression, remember sometimes people have to first find the reason to want to do these things. Or even just the reason to get out of bed.

  2. It’s good that you don’t understand, Joe. I don’t understand schizophrenics during a psychotic episode, and that’s a good thing.

I sadly understand depression very well; I’ve struggled with it for decades now, and both people who want to simplify it and people who want to complicate it are right.

On one hand, the people who want to simplify it (usually because they don’t suffer from it) are right in that one should try to get their life as well as possible before they decide they’re “depressed”.

Conversely, people who overcomplicate it are right in that medication is a valid course of treatment, and it’s a real issue that you can’t just fix.

Personally, if I didn’t manage my life, work-life balance, exercise, diet, and try to keep a healthy perspective, depression would’ve done me in a while ago. But also, I had medication for it and I now recognize how real it is, and how exhausted I was fighting it without medication.

So far, I’ve been without the medication for about three months and I feel like I’m functioning correctly, but that doesn’t mean I’m not monitoring myself, and trying to heal my life holistically.

To make a long story short: Depression is real and should be taken seriously, but everyone still has the homework of their life to work on.

  3. I use to look at that client who looked sad and depressed and didn't understand how come such a beautiful woman with a boyfriend who seemed to care about her is depressed….but when I started to experience depression myself…it hit differently….only depressed people can understand each other and how it feels!
