Capitalism can exist with stronger, less individualistic communities too. This is actually more of a phenomenon of liberalism, which seeks to individuate people more by creating nuclear families, that sorta thing. In the 19th century, people lived in extended families. Social sciences were nascent at best, because there wasn't enough admissions to psych wards.
The problem with a war uniting people is that society can't survive a war for more than a few years.
Greece, Rome, Persia… all had large cities filled with strangers. Not sure that “alone in a crowd” is a 20th century feature.
Ok fine, but before you shoot your mouth off romanticizing tribal life, live without electricity, plumbing, mass produced goods, hot showers, wheeled motorized transport etc etc.
We could certainly moderate the current system (I could never live in a big city) but you can NOT have it both ways.
