  1. Woodley did exactly what he had to do and any of you Woodley haters (I used to be one) would do the same thing in his shoes. Look at it this way… pretend you're a world champion mixed martial artist and you're getting matched up against a world class contender.

This contender has a very specific way of fighting, and therefore, there's a very specific manner in which you must fight to beat him. For example, if karate chopping your opponent's left knee is the most likely way to win, that's what you do. At this level of the sport, you do exactly what you have to do to win. If you accidentally karate chop their right knee, even once, you're going to be knocked out — you lose your belt, your career and life will be irreparably derailed. For this reason, it doesn't matter if the "fans" prefer seeing karate chops to the RIGHT leg, if karate chops to the LEFT leg will get you the win… then that's what you do.

Now put yourself in Woodley's shoes. If rushing in against Demian Maia will lead to a takedown, back take, and fatal choke, why would you do that? Seven professionally trained killers in a row have failed to defeat this man by allowing him to gain control of their body. The recipe for victory is to utterly avoid doing anything that may provide an opportunity for Demian to obtain control over your body. This recipe must be followed regardless of fan approval! If you don't follow this recipe, you will lose the fight, lose the belt, and in a matter of seconds… lose years of progress, all because of a mistake that was within your physical capabilities to avoid.

When you're a champion, and you fight the top contender, the priority is to win. Unfortunately, Woodley had to fight a specialist with a skillset that requires a very controlled, conservative strategy to attain victory. So in order to win, he had to displease the fans who have absolutely no understanding of the intricacies of modern MMA. It was either that, or lose to please them. I think he made the right decision.
