  1. While cultural appropriation exists, the way the word is used in the examples in the video is not accurate. The use of things traditionally associated with a specific culture when there is no genetic connection to said culture is completely fine as long as it’s treated with respect. Cultural appropriation is when elements unique to a certain culture are taken and used without any respect to it’s meaning or the culture behind it. Culture should not be gate-kept by genetics because saying that you can’t do something because of your genetics is racism by definition.

  2. If anyone could "own" culture, white "cis" men would have sole ownership of, any everyone else couldn't use, things like cars, planes, bikes, rockets, the internet as well as ideas like democracy and civilization – just to mention a few things. Crazy idea.

  3. He is using an extreme example to disclaim the concept of cultural appropriation, which he clearly denies is a problem in other podcasts.

Cultural appropriation is when a privileged group of people enjoys the merits of an oppressed group of people, without offering the respect, investigating the roots, or offering exchange or compensation for taking something that does not belong to them. If a cultural group is oppressed, then this can actually harm them further because their culture is further degraded. It is like a form of desecration or stealing.

If you learn from another culture, you exchange with them, you learn from them, and give back you cant call that cultural appropriation because you understand the roots and the reasons and you are offering something of yourself in exchange.
